On Status Of Translator And Its Reflection In Translation Practice

First of all, translation is a practice-oriented activity, which has interspersed withthousands’ years of history in China and foreign countries and played a crucial role ininterpretation of numerous classics, dissemination of various cultures and increasing mutualunderstanding. Countless translation phenomena have been processed and condensed to builda basis for translation theory, which is rooted in practice and in turn guide translation practiceas well. As a student of master of translation and interpretation, the author constructs thepaper on the translation practice Pipi on Board, a famous Children’s Novel of Swedish writerAstrid Lindgren, which has been widely spread and translated into45languages. The papermajorly analyzed the status of translator and its reflection in translation practice with thetranslation theory of domestication and foreignization.Translator is always the main body of translation practice. As a translator, he/she givesfull play of subjective initiative in translation practice, bridges between the original and thetranslated text as well as the original writer and targeted reader, and they are of greatimportance in promoting the understanding and communication between two cultures.However, translators have received little attention in the translation field and been sufferingfrom discrimination and dispute from being criticized as “slave with shackle” to a femininecharacter. But as the study on translation practice deepens, people have renewed theirperspective on translators’ status. Some scholars proposed in the new era the“translator-centered theory”. The paper will discuss the problem on the basis of her practiceand clarify difficulties confronted during the translation process and the role that thetranslator plays to overcome difficulties and produce an excellent translated text. In the pointof view of the author, a clear awareness of his/her status leads the translator to be moreconfidant in the process of carrying out the translation practice. In view of the above andbased on the author’s practical experience as a translator, this paper focuses on the status oftranslators and its reflection in the translation practice and expand the discussion of relatedissues to clarify the true position of a translator and his/her role and function displayed in the translation process. One of the purposes of the paper is to provide some clues for beginners oftranslation study and practitioners of translation practice and help them recognize their statusand position during the process.
