As an important Southern female writer of American in the20century, CarsonMcCullers inherited the southern literary traditions with a distinctive personal feature inthe works. She usually depicted the marginalized figures and the solitary feelings alwayshaunted in her works. Among all of the studies on Carson McCullers, the focuses of theresearchers were the eternal theme---Spiritual Isolation. This paper tries to introduce thespatial criticism to re-interpretation the works of McCullers from the perspective of spaceand regards the concept of "heterotopias" which created by the French philosopherMichel Foucault as the breakthrough point. Further, readers can re-think the collectionbetween the causes of the "heterogeneity" in McCullers’ works and the life experiencesof the writer by analyzing the regional features, character images and complicatedcharacter relations. Finally, we can put McCullers in the traditions of the AmericanSouthern Literature to explore her inheritance and transcendence of the heterogeneous.Meanwhile, we should aware that McCullers’ works were based on her ownexperiences. She attributed the human alienation to the real world. She also focused onthe internal world of the individual under the discipline of space. McCullers had noticedthe spiritual isolation brought by the disability of the communication in the interpersonalrelationship of the modern society. In fact, what McCullers’ attention and reflection onthe reality finally directed to the human existence and spiritual pursuit.
