Contemporary literary works, especially novels, are difficult to translate due to theirunique cultural and aesthetic characteristics. The translator not only conveys the originalsemantic information accurately, but also reproduces the artistic conception of literaturefaithfully, so that the target readers could gain same aesthetic enjoyment with the readersof the original version. During translation process, three typical problems normally occur:that, respectively, vocabulary, long sentences and rhetoric. The principle of faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance by Yanfu and the theory of functional equivalence theory byNida may shed lights on these problems. Meanwhile, these problems may be resolved bymeans of linear and inverse translation, specific and abstract translation. In this project, the episode of Distant Town of The Graves of Youth--warm bed istranslated from Chinese to English. Regarding the three key problems mentioned above, three strategies are applied in the process of translation:1) modifying the order of wordsor sentences in the original text;2)accommodating to the idiomatic expression in the targetculture; and3) elaboration or simplification of the original expression. Reflections of thistranslation project are as follow:1) Accurate interpretation of thoughts and emotionembedded in the original version requires thorough understanding of the text, as well ashigh proficiency in both Chinese and English.2) In order to better accommodate to theidiomatic expressions in the target language, the translator should develop a solidunderstanding of the difference between the source and the target cultures.3) Realprofessional translator, as well as quality translation, must be supported by profoundtheories and strategies in translation.
