A Functionalist Approach To The Subtitle Translation Of The History Of The Kingdom Of Chu

In our country, subtitles translation is a kind of emerging industry, so its theoretical studies are still in the preliminary stage, most of which are based on the Skopos theory of German functionalist theory, and mainly focus on the English-to-Chinese translation of the subtitle of foreign film products. The studies of the Chinese-to-English translation of documentary subtitle, especially domestic documentary subtitle, are relatively few. Based on the text type theory of German functionalist theory, this thesis has analyzed the translation of the subtitle of The History of the Kingdom of Chu. Based on the text type theory, it has analyzed the text type and the characteristics of the subtitle of The History of the Kingdom of Chu. It has also analyzed the translation principles and translation strategies for the translation. The thesis holds that the subtitle of The History of the Kingdom of Chu belongs to informative and operative text, which has characteristics of transient nature and space limitation, literariness and oral nature, and that during the translation process, principles of loyalty, accuracy and simplicity should be followed and strategies of literal translation, free translation, omission, domestication and foreignization should be used. The translation of the examples demonstrates that the text type theory of German functionalist theory has the guiding effect on the translation of the subtitle of film and television programs, and that the translation principles and strategies in this thesis have practical and effective function on subtitle translation.
