“Waving hands” is not only a reflection of Tujia’s art of waving dancing and music, but also maintains diverse essence of art embedded in Tujia’s ancient religion, drama, military, sports and ethnic culture. Therefore, waving activity is a comprehensive collection of Tujia’s traditional art. This thesis is aiming at studying the musical factors in Tujia’s large-scale sacrificial activities during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.By means of literature and field research, you can acquire the general music profile and individual music forms of the mature traditional “Waving hands”, and you can as well compare that with the current “Waving hands” forms, utilizing the disciplinary analysis approach of “historical ethnic musicology”, and thus experiencing Tujia’s “changed and unchanged” waving activities. This study’s main contents and new acquirements are as follows:This article is comprised of introduction and four chapters. The introduction mainly focuses on specific elaboration of “Xiangxi Pang’s Pacification Superintendence” and “Waving hands”. Besides, it displays the relevant original resources and dissertation of current research, and it has absorbed the academic theory of “historical ethnic musicology.”The chapter I has introduced the historical circumstances, including historical origins, religious beliefs and the like of “Waving hands.” The “Worship of King” is generated from chieftain period under class govern, especially prevailing during the Ming and Qing chieftain period, and this chapter also explained the historical background of Ming and Qing’s “Waving hands” activity.The second chapter is based on all historical files gathered by the author to help review and trace back to the historic site, restore historic authentic appearance, and recognize various musical forms. The tradition ceremony could be mainly divided into three parts: Timajishen, Wavingjishen, and Singing on the lawns. Timajishen includes songs and dances used during the ritual. Wavingjishen refers to people singing together, waving hands and the musical accompaniment. Singing on the lawns is mainly portrayed in the "Zuzhici", an ancient way of expressing love among Tujia young men and women. Yong men making acquaintances through songs could make marriage engagement that night under the witness of Tujia witches.In the third chapter, the author tries to make comparison of the current status and the original appearance of Waving activities, thereby explaining why evolution emerged, what similarities and differences existing, and how the ritual discipline transformed, and then looking for the essence of the "changed and unchanged” music culture.In order to build a holistic understanding of "Waving" activity and music, this thesis is based on literature of Ming and Qing Dynasties, including the history of the "Yongshunfuzhi," "Yongshunxianzhi", "Longshanxianzhi" "Baojingxianzhi" and "Guzhangpingtingzhi" and other local history documents, combined with field surveys: The author has visited Yongshun County Shuangfeng Village, Yongshun old city, Baojing County’s Shoubatong Village and Xiangxi State Museum, trying to focus on the history, keeping an eye on the living heritage, and highlighting the historical context of the "Waving hands."...
