The main objective of this study is to analyze the conversations between doctors and patients from the perspective of Grice’s Cooperative Principle. In general, misunderstandings are a common phenomenon in our daily conversations. Poor communication is the main cause for a lot of medical disputes. The purpose of the thesis is to discuss which principle is easier to follow, which principles are much easier to violate, and to analyze the reasons when put forward the correct methods. Furthermore, the thesis aims at making the conclusion more persuasive through taking typical examples and providing a guideline for both sides of the doctor-patient conversations in observing the cooperative principle, so that the doctor-patient communication failures can be reduced.Conversation between doctors and patients is a kind of special, personal conversation, which is caused by necessity. It is not only a conversation between doctors and patients, but also affects the life and health of patients. Language has been affirmed as having an important role in the medical progress. Every word of a patient can affect the conversation between doctors and patients favorably or negatively. A great conversation between a doctor and a patient can placate the patient’s mood and inspire the patient to fight their condition. Poor communication between a doctor and their patients can cause misunderstanding which cause the relationship between them to deteriorate.The quality of conversation between doctors and patients therefore has an important role in the treatment of disease. Conversations between doctors and patients that observe cooperative principle favor effective treatment of illnesses and the conversation between doctors and patients that violate cooperative principle hinder effective treatment. The conversation between doctors and patients is chosen the research aim that has theoretical value and practical significance. This paper will analyze the conversations between doctors and patients using qualitative and quantitative analysis. The research can be used by doctors and patients to focus on their conversation to promote a better working relationship.The qualitative analysis and the quantitative analysis method are applied in this paper. A questionnaire survey was carried out from March 2013 to August 2013, with the whole process including: questionnaire design, survey, payment, recovery, data processing and other links. In the process of investigation, questionnaires were used as far as possible to ensure the data quality and improve the recovery of the questionnaire and to overcome the defect of questionnaire research method. Before the start of formal investigation questionnaire, first trial choice for small sample of respondents to the questionnaire in order to try to fill the questionnaire design that will make sure the progress of the survive smooth that reduce the respondents to the questionnaire to understand the differences meaning. It can also check that the respondents filled out the questionnaires at the required time, which grasp the content of the questionnaire. In formal investigation, questionnaire has been sent to the different sections of the doctors and patients that lead to ensure data accuracy and authenticity. The other method is interviewed some special case that violate the cooperative principle.According to the survey data show the sequence that doctors violate the cooperative principle is the maxim of manner, the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality and the maxim of relevance. The patient is just the opposite with the doctor, which the sequence that patients violate the cooperative principle is the maxim of quality, the maxim of relevance, the maxim of quantity and the maxim of manner. The doctor in the conversation between doctors and patients has more medical knowledge than patients, so patients grasp the power status; but patients know more their conditions. The main purpose of conversation between doctors and patients is the exchange of information between the two sides. It will make the doctor knows the patient’s physical condition and make patients know their treatment. Both doctors and patients need to join the efforts of in the session, to follow the principles of cooperation, which can reduce the confliction of doctors and patients that is conducive to the cure of disease.
