Combining the theories of modernity and feminist,this thesis aims to interpret Chinese female personal writing at the turn of the century from the perspective of Giddens’ theory about the intimacy transformation. Through the analysis of the fictions written by Chen Ran, Wei Hui, Mianmian, Anne baby and Muzimei, we can find that the intimacy was transformed in China. The traditional relationships between the sexes and families was transformed, a new type of intimacy which was abstract and virtual has appeared. The transformation was step by step, and developed to the extreme at last. Based on this, we try to interpret the problem of Chinese female personal writing at the turn of the century. We try to examine the essence and characteristics of the fictions by women at the turn of the century in the modernity context. Then we can be better to understand and grasp it and judge its significance in literary history.In general, people were accustomed to use feminism theory to explain women novels in the 1990’s,such as Chen Ran’s writing. There are so much description about sex and body. They thought this was a way to against male chauvinism. The women writers take this to create a female discourse so that they can get rid of the state of male chauvinism. The female has been under the rule of men since the ancient.At the end of the century,people thought that the Wei Hui, Mianmian’s novels were body writing to cater to the market. Female writing was extended to the internet in the Internet Era. Although Anne baby was popular in the internet users, her writing was still controversial. At the beginning of the 21 st century, Muzimei wrote her own sex stories in her diaries frankly that was criticised by the society form all sides. There were just individual commentators thought she was pursuing female freedom and liberation. In a word, the critics ignored that the reflection of the intimacy transformation in these novels.So we try to analysis these novels in this thesis,in order to discus the intimacy transformation in the modern society. Then the “personal writing” or “body writing” is not only a moral problem, but also a social problem.This thesis is consist of six parts. The first part is introduction: In this part,we are going to clear the object of the study, card the research situation and explain the research method. The second part is chapter One: in this part,we are going to discuss about the female novels at the beginning of 90’s.Taking Chen Ran as an example to prove that elite women began to wake up under the circumstance of traditional relationship partly collapse.The third part in chapter Two: in this part, we are going discuss about Wei Hui, Mianmian’s novels. People in their novels had no family. They were grow up in the city and began to enjoy the strange relationship in the city. The forth part is chapter Three: in this part, we are going to discuss about network novels. Setting Anne baby as an example, we can find a new type of relationship is appear, and the relationship is virtual and abstract. The fifth part is chapter Four : in this part,we are going to analyse the Muzimei phenomenon. Muzimei wrote her own sex stories in her diaries. People in her stories enjoy the strange relationship completely. And at the meantime, the boundaries between fiction and reality was die out in her writing, creation was telling the story about the author. The last part is conclusion: through the discussion,we can get a glimpse of the transformation of intimacy in China at the turn of the century and the problems faced by women.
