During the nineties of twentieth century, a lot of female writers appearto be extraordinary splendor. They touch the men and women's hearts inunique methods, reshape themselves, and also demonstrate the lonelinessas women who have lost their own role for a long time. Chen Ran, amiddle aged female writer, is one of them and her works shows greatoriginality. No one can deny that Chen Ran is a feminine writer; however, we findby analyzing her works that what she expresses is not only the women'sstandpoint or their self-existent status but also the concern with the lifeand the pain in the life. Though she approaches to the world from thefemale and personal perspective, she accomplishes the work that probesinto the pain during the survival. She insists on restricting interest on thecharacters on the fringe and exploring the complexity of the human beings. She illustrates people's survival state through her penetrating perceptionand particular personal experience. In the plaintive A Toast to the Past, thewitty Cumbrous Roles, and the uncanny A Piece of Chippy Paper, sheexposes all her experience and pain in life bravely. She demonstrates awoman's desire, thought, loneliness and morbidity, and further sublimesthe female and personal characters to the human beings, which makes herwhole work possesses the rational profundity and indicates her worryabout the plight of human beings. InChen Ran's work, not only the femalethoughts but also the thinking about the survival problems can beperceived. Therefore, she should not be just defined as a female writer, and this dissertation explores her works through the two aspectsmentioned above.
