The researching objects of this thesis refer to the dress and accessory substantives depicted in Book of Songs. We make textual criticisms and explanations for these noumena and investigate both the naming motivations and laws of dress-naming mode. Our thesis mainly covers the following four parts. The introduction comes first. It discusses the cause and significance of the study as well as tasks of our thesis. Also, it presents achievements and limitations of scholar’s research. Our supporting theories and researching methods include substantives criterion,’Triple Evidence’to deal with noumenon and etymologic meaning, as well as source-indicating function of phonetic sign. The second part is the body of our thesis, dealing with noumenon and etymology research. We divide it into six chapters according to the categories of dress and accessory substantives:the head dress, the upper garment & long dress, the lower garment, the foot dress, the accessory, and the texture & pattern. In this part, we carefully studied 49 items of all 88 words basing on two dimensions- the substance itself and the etymological meaning. For the noumenon part, basic characters such as color, shape, structure and function are discussed comprehensively, and new evidences are presented to support our opinions in controversial issues. For the etymological meaning part, cognate words are linked and common semanteme is analyzed to trace the cognate meaning. When it comes to disyllabic compound words, morphemes that indicate distinctive feature and the word structures are studied as well. The main innovations of this part are reflected in the following areas. Firstly, we link cognate words and search for the etymological meanings to help analyze characters of dress and accessories. For instance, we find that the cognate words group’磌、瑱、填、真’,whose etymological meaning is stuffing, can be used to prove the proper concept of tian(填)Another group‘檀、驙、旦、(?)’with the etymological meaning ’white’ indicates the color of Zhanyi(展衣)should be white. That problem has been puzzling people for thousands of years. Secondly, we take advantage of ’Triple Evidence’to help with our research. For example, the interpretations of Bian(弁)and Pao(袍)in Book of Songs Dictionary by Mr. Xiang Xi turn out to be imperfect and even incorrect when’paper materials’ and ’underground materials’ are taken into consideration. We also disprove Qian Xuan’s viewpoint of Heng(珩) by displaying some jade groups excavated recently. As for culture and customs materials, we present silk dyeing process, which has been regarded as non-material cultural heritage to display the relationship between Zi(缁)and mud. Besides, ’Zhangye’, the name of a northwestern Chinese city gained by the implication of ’open-armed’ can also indicate the cognate meaning of Qu(胠).Chapter seven is the third part of our thesis. It organizes and summarizes motivations for naming dress and accessory substantives. We sort and list cognate meanings obtained in the first six chapters into three types of naming motivation: external form of the object, creation method and function. These three types of motivations provide us with clues tracing thinking patterns, habits and customs of early people, as well as laws that also operate in cognition science field. There exist both similarities and differences in regularities of naming dressing substantives and nature objects. Similarity lies in the fact that the external forms and function play dominant roles in naming procedure for both dressing substantive and nature object while the dressing substantives also obtain names from its wearing manners and creation methods. The forth part is the epilogue. First, We make a statement for the rest 39 items that has not been carefully researched on in this thesis. We list both 18 monosyllabic words whose etymological meaning can hardly be detected and 21 disyllables whose compound structure can be easily analyzed in tables so that further research can be done in future. Finally, we summarize the main content of our thesis.
