Perspectives on American Law is a legal treatise written by famous American professors of law with a view to introduce lawyers and the law in America, the court system and the judges in America, private and public sectors in American law. Chapter 9 of this book focuses on copyright law and trademark law in America and introduces how each of these two distinct bodies of law has responded to the changes posed by new technology. This translation report, based on the translation practice of chapter 9, describes the operation process of this translation task, analyzes the stylistic features of the source text, and sums up the four typical problems arising in the translation of this type of text: the translation of legal terms, of nominalization, of complicated long sentences, and the way of dealing with cultural differences. It also analyzes the causes of these problems. This translation report uses adaptation theory to discuss how to solve these problems and proposes specific approaches to the solution of these problems. A summary of the translation practice, this report reveals how the translator has used the theory concerned to solve the typical problems in translation. Its conclusion can provide a reference for other translators when they translate legal treatise.
