The source text of this report is a legal news article named The Reference and the Rhetoric of Personal Pronouns in English and Chinese Legal News Reports. This report includes the description of the translation report, the translation process, the selected translation theories, difficult lexical items and sentences encountered in the process of translation, and the application of the selected translation theories to the translation practice.Considering the lack of translation reports related to legal news articles in CNKI,this report aims to provide some reference for future translation practice and translation research of legal news articles by presenting the complete picture of the translation project. The significance of this report can be summarized into four aspects.First, this report treats the translation task of the source text as a translation project, presents a complete translation process, and points out the importance of studying the characteristics of the source text in selecting the guiding translation theories.Beyond that, this report introduces good translation tools, the recommended timings of glossary building, the recommended timings for solving translation problems as well as the operational steps and standards of self-proofreading and quality control.Second, this report contends that the guiding translation theories should be determined by the characteristics of the source text.By analyzing the source text,we find that both lexical items and sentences in the source text are interdisciplinary. However, due to the essential differences between lexical translation and sentence translation,we select Susan Sarcevic's legal translation theory and Peter Newmark's translation theory of text typology for lexical translation and sentence translation respectively in the source text.Third, this report puts forward eight standards for retaining the content and the form of the source text based on the writer's own translation experience as Newmark's translation theory of text typology does not offer specific standards to measure whether the content and the form of the source text have been retained in the target text.Fourth,in the chapter of case analysis, this report demonstrates how to use the selected translation theories and translation standards to help deal with difficult lexical items and sentences.in the source textThis report consists of five chapters, namely, description of the translation project, theoretical basis, translation process, case analysis, and conclusion. The firstchapter description of the translation project explains the content of the translation project, the value of the source text, and the value of the report. The second chapter theoretical basis briefly introduces the translation theories used in the translation project. The third chapter translation process proposes that the translation process can be divided into three stages which are the preparation for the translation, the process of the translation and the process after the translation, and each stage contains a series of steps. The fourth chapter case analysis is comprised of lexical translation and sentence translation. In terms of lexical translation, the report presents six types of lexical items: legal terms;new terms;grammatical terms;rhetorical terms;semantic, stylistic and pragmatic terms;difficult expressions. In terms of sentence translation, the report presents three types of sentences, namely, sentences with referential relationships, sentences with complex logic, and sentences with numbers. In the final chapter conclusion, the writer of the report has summarized the findings, limitations and suggestions of the report, aiming to provide some reference for future translation practice and translation research of legal news articles.
