International maritime search and rescue cooperation has a long history, and the disappearance of Flight MH370 in 2014 makes it a public focus again; but the Chinese translation approach to English maritime search and rescue literature is under-researched. Based on the author’s Chinese translation of English maritime search and rescue literature, this thesis undertakes investigation in this area by analyzing the translation within the framework of text typology proposed by Katharina Reiss and Skopos theory proposed by Hans Vermeer. Explicitation and neutralization are adopted as the two main tools in the analysis of the maritime search and rescue literature translation strategies. The research has found that both explicitation and neutralization are used frequently to ensure the target text accurate and acceptable by target readers. The thesis is divided into six parts:Part 1 reviews text typology proposed by Katharina Reiss and its related research; Part 2 reviews Skopos theory proposed by Hans Vermeer and its related research; Part 3 and 4 reviews the translation strategies of explicitation and neutralization and their related research; Part 5 explains the text type of the author’s translation texts, and presents translation strategies of explicitation and neutralization in the author’s translation practice. It also illustrates how different translation strategies can be constrained by diversified translation purposes. The last part concludes that within the framework of text typology, maritime search and rescue literature is informative text with some features of expressive texts, so under the guidance of Skopos theory, the translation strategies of explicitation and neutralization are adopted in translation practice to ensure the target text is accurate and acceptable.
