Explicitation Strategies In E-C Translation

Explicitation refers to the phenomenon of clarifying what is implicit in the ST in the TT.The aim of utilizing explicitation strategies is to explicate the original information in the translated text,so as to improve the readability of the target text and help the readers gain a better understanding of the original text.Blum-Kulka(1986)formulated explicitation hypothesis and regarded explicitation results from "the translation process itself",i.e.from"the process of interpretation" which is performed by the translator intentionally.Especially for an English text that contains a variety of abstract philosophical terms and implicit monologues,it would be a great help for Chinese readers if these problems could be solved in the translation of a text.For this reason,the author decides to deal with explicitation,a specific textual phenomenon,in a philosophical context.This report is based on the translation of Nietzsche's Philosophy of Education.The book mainly introduces Nietzsche's reviews on the views of previous philosophers on philosophy and education and his own ideas on these two domains.As a book that covers many Nietzsche's monologues and obscure philosophical terms,one of the big challenges lies in explicating those elements while preserving the original sense in Chinese.On this account,this report will discuss the explicitation strategy and illustrate how these strategies can be applied to make the target text become more explicit and reader-friendly for ordinary Chinese readers who are unfamiliar with Education and Philosophy.The research method of this report is to analyze examples under the guidance of Klaudy's theory,who categorized explicitation into four types,namely,obligatory explicitation,optional explicitation,pragmatic explicitation and translation-inherent explicitation.For each type,the author summarizes a few strategies that can be utilized to solve the case.It is hoped that the author can provide a better idea of how to apply explicitation strategies and make the original text more comprehensible for C hinese readers.
