More and more people attracted by China’s prosperity are rushing into China for their education, jobs, travel and potential business cooperation. Appropriate English translations of public signs can do a lot actual help to our foreign friends. The author of this thesis has exerted much effort to collect samples of public signs which are inappropriately translated in some scenic areas in Tianjin.The samples are classified into spelling mistakes, non-idiomatic translations, unclear translations/mistranslations/information loss, grammatical mistakes, inconsistent translations of an original text, translations of various mistakes and others. Then all the inappropriate translations are analyzed and corrected in accordance to the theory of Reiss about the type of text. It is the objective samples that indicate how severe the situation of English translations of public signs in scenic areas in Tianjin is. Through the external phenomenon, the internal cause can be unsealed. The threes relevant causes have been shown in this thesis in detail. Then some targeted solutions have been proposed aiming at giving as more help as possible to standardize the language environment and to improve the international image of Tianjin.This thesis is composed of six chapters. Chapter one is the introduction of public signs and its current situation and future of English translation. Chapter two is about why I chose the tourism of Tianjin to do my investigation and how I carried it out. And chapter three is on the settlement and analysis of the samples collected. The core parts of this thesis are next two chapters which have tried to find the causes and make some suggestions of improving the English translations of public signs. And I show my some feelings and thoughts, obtained during my investigation, in the last chapter of this thesis.
