Isang Yun(17th, September 1917-- 3rd, November 1995), who is a Korean German. He tried to make innovation in each of his work. He also applied both the creating techniques of the East and the West and absorbed the western modern techniques. Meanwhile, he was dedicated to the research of oriental culture. Eventually, he could combine the eastern techniques with western techniques and utilized western techniques to express the musical thinking of the East. Isang’s creating thoughts and methods can be fully illustrated in the ‘Hauptton’, which was dominant in the music circles of 20 th century.Isang had many works in his whole life, among which chamber music accounted for a large proportion. The chamber music is in various types and involves almost all categories of ensemble(Duet, Trio, Quartet, Quintet etc.) and large-scale chamber music. Novellette, which will be analyzed in this paper, is one of the numerous works. It is the chamber music that is created for alto flute, harp with violin and viola or cello. Its particular style, the ‘composing technique of primary note ’, runs through the whole melody. This paper includes three chapters. The first chapter introduces Isang’s life and demonstrates his creative ideas. It also involves his several creating periods and other concepts, such as ‘yin yang philosophy’ ‘primary note’ and ‘the major acoustics’. The second chapter analysises the Novellette through the creating background, scheme, pitch relation and pace. The third chapter demonstrates the significance of composition and research. Through comparing the western and eastern culture, the styles of the composers can be clearly understood.Through analyzing the work, composers can better understand the creating ideas of Isang’s ‘composing technique of primary note ’, which has realistic significance and applied value for composers to explore the combination of western and eastern culture and achieve the creative style that the traditional style is complementary with the modern one.
