Cultural industry security is a long-standing problem. In the context of globalization, culturally powerful nations use culture as an invasive tool to other nations, posing great threat to the sustainable cultural development of less powerful nations in culture. Since 1997, "Korean wave", which is mainly composed of South Korean films, teleplays and popular music, has spread rapidly and widely in China. The large-scale and long-time spread of South Korean cultural products has exerted seriously tangible and potential influences to our cultural security and the development of our cultural industry. The reasons that "Korean wave" influences the normal development of China’s culture and poses shocks to our culture are partly due to external factors and at the same time due to the problems imbedded in our own cultural development, especially the setbacks in governmental cultural security management. In time of globalization, it is necessary to pay great attention to the threats that "Korean wave" poses to our culture from a strategic perspective of protecting cultural security. Therefore, series of strategic measures should be taken effectively to maintain China’s cultural industry security and propel its sustainable development. The thesis is set to make a research on the "Korean wave" in China from the perspective of national cultural industry security and propose to take strategic measures against the impact of "Korean wave" to secure national cultural industry security. The thesis is composed of four parts:The first part analyzes the root of cultural industry security, pointing out that cultural industry security is getting more attention from all nations with the steps of economic globalization. Then a narration is made of the definition of cultural industry security and the problems it faces. As an important part of national security, cultural industry, if developed in a good way, can protect a nation’s mainstream values and cultural sovereignty and interests from being damaged. At the end of the part, the important strategic stand that cultural industry security holds in national security is emphasized. The second part analyzes "Korean wave" form several aspects, including its definition, characteristics, the details of and the reasons for its spread in China. "Korean wave" refers to the wide cross-cultural spread led by the South Korean government of South Korean mass culture composed of films, teleplays and popular music in east Asian nations and districts. The spread of "Korean wave" can be divided into three stages; starting, active and prime. There are both external reasons from South Korean government and internal reasons from China itself. The third part is the impact of "Korean wave" on China’s cultural industry security. Taking South Korean films and teleplays as example, this part makes a deep analysis of the influences and shocks from "Korean wave" both in theoretical and empirical way and sets out a narration of the tangible and potential threats of "Korean wave" both from economic and ideological perspectives. The main threats include damages to the market share of Chinese culture and balance in cultural trade, invasion of cultural resources, influences on consuming habits, shocks to cultural recognition and disturbance to values. The forth part is the strategic measures taken to tackle with the impact of "Korean wave". To protect our national cultural industry security, which is a grand work, requires all effective measures to be used in a consecutive and concurrent way. The forth part puts forward measures mainly from strategic, industrial and interactive perspectives.
