Sketching is a way for artists to enrich source materials and broaden art experience. More importantly, it plays an essential role in improving a painter’s artistic perception, observation, representation and creativity. In this paper, landscape painting is used as an outset to illustrate the importance of sketching in artistic undertakings.The differences and similarities between sketching and creation are addressed in terms of their own definition. First, landscape painting, as a basic artistic creation method, is essential for an artist to gather source materials, improve their artistic thinking, skills and temperament. Secondly, the importance of sketching in artistic creation is addressed from the perspective of aesthetics. Thirdly, landscape painting improves upon sketching. The two are inter-related to each other and they form an integrated body. Finally, the artistic creation practice of the author is used as an example to expound and prove the relationship between sketching and creation as well as the importance of sketching in artistic creation.
