Public English plays an important role in the cultivation of students’language ability as a compulsory course in higher vocational college. Firstly, it plays a fundamental role for the language learning of higher vocational college students. Secondly, it will develop students’ communicative ability fully, especially the ability to do things with words, so they can use English in the future works and deal with problems. English teaching materials should be changed with the changes of teaching requirements in vocational colleges, but the development of teaching materials lags in the process of teaching, and it cannot meet the needs of teaching. The role that teaching materials played in English curriculum has not yet reached the requirements of cultivating students’ ability of application of language in practical works and the height of solving practical problems. The reform and innovation of teaching materials should be carried on, and "task-based" teaching materials should be developed. Therefore, the principle and specific approach for compiling task-based teaching materials of public English in higher vocational college is put forward by the author of the thesis through investigation, and case analysis is carried on.For chapter one, it introduces research background and significance, carries on research synthesis for evaluation and compiling principles of English teaching materials, defines the core concepts, and introduces the theoretical basis and the basic method of this study. For the second chapter, it conducts a questionnaire survey and analysis including the satisfaction of students, teachers, graduates and employers’ to teaching materials which are quantitatively studied, and points out the problems of teaching materials. The third chapter proposes the compiling principles of the design of competency-based teaching material and selecting materials accord with professional categories. The specific approach is selecting authentic language materials, design real teaching tasks closely related to daily communication and daily work, applying screw theory in the teaching material design, choosing different teaching content according to different majors, updating type of knowledge of teaching materials, applying the teaching materials structure of training ability and paying attention to exercises of communicative function. The fourth chapter is on the comparison between traditional teaching materials and task-based teaching material.
