Theodore Dreiser is the pioneer and representative of modern American fiction, who employs the realist writing style to express the dissatisfaction and criticism on the existing social system and shows a bold, innovative modern idea to society. Dreiser has written 8 novels that have a profound influence on future generations. He spent more than thirty years writing Trilogy of Desire that describes three alienated prospects. The alienated prospects in the novel can be divided into alienated life prospect, alienated economic prospect and alienated political prospect. The alienated life prospect is mainly composed of alienated family life prospect, alienated consumption life prospect and alienated communication prospect; the alienated economic prospect consists of Cowperwood’s alienated economic activities and alienated food chain in the economic field; the alienated political prospect is made up of corruption in the political circle and shady deal in democratic election. These alienated prospects derive from social aspect, author’s experience and literary tradition of alienated description. The novel is an art work rich in creative literary form that reflects human essential power. Although “alienation” does not symbolize beauty, it reflects an objective expression of human society and author’s unique creative ideas. The alienated prospects in Trilogy of Desire have a certain value of social recognition, artistic production and art appreciation.Dreiser is the representative writer of American naturalism literary.
