A Study On The Great China Film Development Co.Ltd

After the Second Sino-Japanese War, the history of Chinese film always pays more attention to the ideological contradictory dualistic writing, the creation of commercial film in the cracks is not much concerned. The Great China Film Development Co. Ltd. as an early representative of Chinese private studios, its history of rise and fall is a microcosm of the post-war development of domestic commercial films. The existing historical achievements of the company are fuzzy, and there are many mistakes. This paper intend to categorize and study the Great China Film Development Co. Ltd., from two aspects of industrial development and the style of creation, by means of historical researches, images, videos and texts.In the aspect of industry, the history of the company with changes in different situation can be divided into four stages, preparation, initial period, stability and recession. These four stages correspond to the mutative business process of "The Great China" in Chongqing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, forming the "The Great China Model" of operation across the district and outlining the rough pictures of the post-war development of the Chinese private industry. In the aspect the creation, this paper disserts, from the angles of style of filmmaker and categorization, based on the large number of the existing images, videos and texts, the company’s strategies of business creations and the "the Great China Mentality" of compromising with mainland Chinese market of mandarin. On the basis of the industry and the research of creation, this paper sets position of cross-regional Chinese film company for "The Great China", whose brief operation accomplishes the post-war cross-regional circulation of movie talents and the capital, reflects the liquidity of the Chinese film industry’s attempt to break the Shanghai center in the year specific. Its ultimate demise is a picture of the fate of the domestic private film industry under certain conditions after war.The aims of the research of "The Great China" in this paper are on one hand to fill in a gap and to correct mistakes in the discourse of "The Great China" in the traditional film history, with the help of the historical date and images; on the other hand, to get the perspective ecological of post-war domestic commercial films by chance of this company’s research, and to complement for the construction of Chinese film history.
