Since the 1980s,industrial development has increasingly relied on the formation of industrial networks among multiple enterprises based on intra-industry division of labor. The organization and operation of this industrial division of labor model is of great significance in enhancing the economic performance of enterprises and sustaining the competitiveness of regional industries.Specifically, industrial networks are geographically and spatially manifested in the following two dimensions:one is the local industrial network formed due to agglomeration power, and the other is the cross-regional industrial network formed due to diffusion power. In this context, the influence of local industrial network connections and cross-regional industrial network connections on industrial development has aroused extensive discussions in academic circles:some scholars focus on industrial clusters or regional economic specialization, they emphasize the role of local industrial network connections and advocate promoting industrial development by strengthening the division of labor and cooperation among local enterprises;another part of scholars devote themselves to the study of global value chains or global production networks. They emphasize the role of cross-regional industrial network connections and advocate promoting industrial development by strengthening cross-regional division of labor and cooperation with the outside world. The two directions of "localization" and "globalization" of industrial networks mentioned above have been advancing in parallel for a long time, with little dialogue and communication between scholars. In view of this, this paper takes the China's film industry as the research object and selects the top 30 domestic film projects in the box office of the Chinese mainland film market in each year from 2002 to 2019 as the research sample(2,987 enterprises or non-enterprise organizations distributed in 132 cities are involved in 540 film projects)to construct a Chinese domestic film industry network. On this basis, the connection characteristics of cross-regional film industry networks and local film industry networks were quantitatively analyzed using the social network analysis method and the natural discontinuity grading method, and the impact of the above two types of industry network connections on the development of China's film industry was empirically analyzed using the econometric analysis method. The marginal contributions of this paper are:First, the connection characteristics of the two-dimensional industrial networks are measured precisely and systematically;second, the significant complementary effects of the two-dimensional industrial network connections in influencing industrial development are verified;third,a heterogeneity analysis of the industrial network connections affecting firm performance is carried out. Therefore, this study promotes the exchange and dialogue between network-based research on "localization" and"globalization" to a certain extent.Specific findings are as follows.(1)The Connection characteristics of cross-regional industry networks of Chinese domestic films:First, from a static point of view,?there are 132 city nodes and 76,987 network connections in the cross-regional industrial network in the city perspective, showing a"core-edge structure" of "one main and two secondary" on the whole.Beijing is the only leading core city, while Shanghai and Hong Kong are the only two sub-core cities. The connections between Hong Kong,Shanghai,Hangzhou,Shenzhen, and Yili and Beijing cover multiple horizontal and vertical links in the value chain, while the connections between Tianjin and Jinhua and Beijing are mostly horizontal cooperative relationships in the value chain, and the connections between Seoul and Taipei and Beijing are mostly vertical supporting relationships in the value chain.?there are 2987 nodes and 113,635 network connections in the cross-regional industrial network from the perspective of enterprises. The network density is low but the network connectivity is high, and the degree distribution and power distribution are very unbalanced. The state-owned enterprise-CFGC is the only leading core node in the network, and its leading module plays the role of "first owner" in the network.Second, dynamically,?During the period 2002-2019,the scale of cross-regional industrial networks from the city perspective is expanding rapidly, the number of foreign city nodes is increasing, the trend of unbalanced network degree distribution and network power distribution among cities is further intensified, and the "core-edge"structure is further strengthened, while the geographical area covered by strong inter-city ties is shrinking. The strongest city pair evolves from"Beijing-Hong Kong" to "Beijing-Shanghai".?During the same period, the scale of cross-regional industry networks from the perspective of enterprises expanded rapidly and there were frequent entry and exit of nodes, the distribution of network degree and network power distribution among enterprises decreased gradually, the "core-edge" structure gradually weakened, and more and more private film enterprises played a leading and central role in the network, just like China Film.More and more private film enterprises are playing a central role in the network, just like CFGC.(2)The Connection characteristics of local industry networks of Chinese domestic films:First,in general, the scale of local industry networks in 132 cities shows a power rate distribution. That is,most corporate or non-corporate organization nodes are clustered in a few cities, and most other cities have only a small number of nodes.Beijing,Hong Kong, and Shanghai rank the top three in terms of local industry network scale, accounting for about 40%,10%,and 9%of the total number of nodes, and about 83%,10%,and 3%of the total number of local industry network ties, respectively, while the remaining 129 cities divide about 40%of the nodes and less than 4%of the local industry network ties.Second, specifically, there are significant differences in the characteristics of local industrial networks among the leading core cities-Beijing,sub-core cities-Hong Kong and Shanghai, and peripheral cities as follows:?The degree of connectivity decreases from "core" to "peripheral" cities.?The proportion of isolated nodes increases from "core" to "edge" cities.?The threshold of the strongest cohesive subgroup decreases sharply from the"core" to the "edge" cities.(3)The impact of two types of industrial network connections on the development of China's film industry:First,in city-based industrial networks, both close local industrial network connections and strong cross-regional industrial network connections help to improve the development performance of cities' film industry;moreover, the above two types of industrial network connections have "positive" complementary effects on the development performance of cities' film industry.Second, among the firm-based networks,?Both strong local and cross-regional network connections contribute to the performance of film production firms; Moreover, these two types of network connections have significant complementary effects. In other words, the stronger the cross-regional industry network connections in the city where the film production company is located, the more the local industry network connections help the film production company achieve better performance.?Heterogeneity analysis based on enterprise ownership type finds that local industry network connections only help to improve the performance of private film production enterprises, while the effect on state-owned production enterprises is not significant; Moreover, the complementary effect is only reflected in affecting the performance of private film production enterprises.?Heterogeneity analysis based on the financial strength of enterprises finds that the complementary effect is only reflected in affecting the performance of film production enterprises with weaker financial strength, while the effect on film production enterprises with stronger financial strength is insignificant.
