As the war situation evolved and China made unremitting efforts in the international community, which efforts included diplomatic negotiations, political propaganda and insistence on the war against Japan, China won economic and military assistance from the Soviet Union and the United States. After Wuhan and Guangzhou were occupied by the enemy, the Chinese anti-Japanese war fell into a stalemate. As a province in the rear battlefield, Guangxi’s strategic position was further promoted for it lies on the international traffic line between Guangxi and Vietnam. In the meanwhile, large-scale airport, railway and highway projects were completed successively. Besides, Guilin was the capital of Guangxi, and its distinguished geographical location, convenient transportation infrastructure, and open-minded cultural atmosphere constantly attracted international assistance forces.During their stay in Guilin, international anti-fascist forces not only protected the region militarily but hit the enemy in the southeast area heavily. Foreign friends to Guilin in succession made it well-known as the "Cultural City of the Anti-Japanese War". Donations by patriotic overseas Chinese and the services offered by machinists returning from foreign countries greatly relieved economic and technical problems. The medical and health services provided by the World Red Cross helped refugees pull through. In addition, the United States and the United Kingdom set up official consulates and news centers in Guilin to help people learn about the outside world during wartime.Chinese official and civilian forces also tried their best to repay the international assistance forces in Guilin by providing economic and logistic support and shelters for allies, establishing institutions to contact Chinese and foreign forces, deepening friendship in the cooperative combat, rescuing allies from danger, holding various return dinners,. initiating warplane donation activities, etc.It should be recognized that the gathering and interaction of anti-fascist forces in Guilin is of exceptional significance. For the United States and the Soviet Union, it heavily hit Japanese invaders and prevented the invaders from invading other countries and regions in the world. For China, it led to a faster victory of the war. For North Korea and Vietnam, it promoted their emancipation. Besides, it also made indelible contributions to today’s cultural exploration and comprehensive development of Guilin.
