Jin Shengtan, as a well-known and controversial literature critic and theorist in late Ming and early Qing dynasty, has made remarkable comment on many a classical Chinese literature works including Chuang-Tzu, Lisao, The Historical Records, Du Fu’s poems,Outlaws of the Marsh and Romance of the Western Chamber, which have been called works of six talents. At the same time, Jin’s own works such as Chanting Ancient Church Solutions, Gifted Scholar Classical, the Selective Comments on the Poetry of Tang Dynasty’s Talents Made in Guanhuatang and Du Shi Jie have been well-acknowledged and widely read. At present, studies on Jin Shengtan and his critical works are out of balance. This study will conduct a comprehensive analysis of Jin Shengtan and his works the Selective Comments on the Poetry of Tang Dynasty’s Talents Made by Guan Huatang and Du Shi Jie. It will help to know Jin better and enrich the theory of literary aesthetics and critics. The study contains mainly five chapters. To be specific:Introduction: this section outlines the literary achievements and status in history of literature of Jin Shengtan, and briefly introduces the research status at home and abroad, the innovation of this paper, practical significance and research methods of the present topic.The first part is a brief introduction, which generalizes Jin Shengtan’s literary achievements and position and reviews the previous studies on the subject as well as demonstrates the significance and methodology of the study. The first chapter introduces Jin Shengtan and situation of critic on Tang Poetry in late Ming and Early Qing Dynasty with an aim to know how Jin’s critics are influenced by his personal character and cultural background.Chapter two is one of the most important parts of the present study. It will have an overall study of Jin’s view on poetry which emphasizes that poem is something that just slips out of the tongue rather than a foreign object. The study presents the content, and connotative meaning of Jin’ view.The third chapter is a study of Jin’s approach to analyze Tang poetry. The author mainly discusses interpretation, advantage and disadvantage and reason of decomposition method by connecting it to stereotyped way of comment on poetry and writing of poetry.The last chapter sums up what has been elaborated in the previous chapters. It concludes the characteristics of Jin’s critic on Tang poetry. For instance, he emphasizes the subjectivity, comprehensive reading of poem used to summarize the uniqueness and creativity of his critics.
