Little Poetry Movement is a very important literary phenomenon in the history of New Poetry Little Poetry is a special,splendid and attractive in the new poetic world in the 1920s because of its new and strange artistic form, distinctive language expres- sions and charms of emotion But for quite a long time, academic circles have disputed endlessly about its rise and decline, and its causes, there are no thorough study about the works and their artistic value The purpose of this thesis is to make a brief comb- out on the rise and decline, the connotation and the artistic characteristics of Little Po- etry, and to give quite a further explanation in theory, so as to make people understand it thoroughly This paper consists of four parts besides the introduction and conclusion Part One focuses on the couses of the movement Beginning with the disputation on its rise and decline, through the data analysis, the paper thinks that although Little Poetry came into being along with New poetry, the large number of the publications in 1922, on which Little Poetry was published show that the Little Poetry Movement flourished from 1922 on The cause of Little Poetry Movement was the mixture be- tween Chinese and Western cultures in the special era After the May 4th Movement (1919), many writers and poets felt puzzled, because they couldn抰 see the future of the nation or theirselves clearly, but the rich nutritive amassment of Chinese classical poetry and translations of Japanese Ballads-, Haiku and Indian Tagore?s short poetry made some of them find out a new form to express and pour out emotions So many writers happened to choose the form of the Little Poetry coincidentally and thus made it a trend quickly at that time Part Two analyzes the contents of the Little Poetry in the 1920s There are three categories, those laying particular stress on scenery, those on expressing emotions and those on reasorng But there were few that were completely about scenery, dilutions and reasoning, the majority mixed them together, that to say, it might be full of e- motions, philosophic theory while writing on scenery; it might have the aid of scenery, paying attention to reasoning while expressing emotions; it might make use of images and metaphors while reasoning things out So as to achieve the goal of mixing emo- tions, scenery and theory So whether those that contained Yuefu spirit, Haiku inter- est and Tagore?s charm, or those that described tender feelings of heart and abstruse philosophy, all had their inner interest and beauty, reflected the inner world of a part of the intellectuals in the 1920s, sang out their voices and the feelings on the new dis- coveries, love, life, nature and society Part Three analyzes artistic value of the Little Poetry There are mainly three as- pects: Firstly, the outstanding characteristic about its style is that it is short It doesn抰 rigidly adhere to a form, it can be from one line of verse to about ten lines, so as to express instant feelings freely Secondly, from the point of connotation of lan- guage, the Little Poetry is full of philosophic theory. It often gives emotions of life to appreciation of beauty through irradiation and focusing on philosophic theory, thus achieves good results just as o see a world in a grain of sand, And a heaven in a wild flower?Thirdly, on expressing emotions, Little Poetry doesn?t express mind straightly, but pay attention to the contructiort of suggestion and representation The complex, many layers and many extend me...
