The textbooks of teaching Chinese as second language is not only the carrier of foreign students learning Chinese, but also the communication media of teachers and students, and glossary annotation is one of the important components of TCSL textbooks. The language learners could get better understanding of the meaning and usage of words through proper annotation. It’s popular in our country to use English notes as the main verbal noting methods in primary textbooks of TCSL (Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language). But different languages cannot be corresponded completely, so the English translation and explanation will not be accurate.This paper takes "Developed Chinese "primary (book I & book II) and "Boya Chinese" elementary (book I & book II) as an example, based on translation theory, contextual theory, contrastive analysis theory and the principle of translation of words, hope can find out the disadvantages in the English annotation of new words, also put forward some suggestions in order to provide reference for the compilation of English annotation in TCSL textbooks.This paper includes four parts:The first part is the theoretical support of this paper. The second is the material analysis which includes a brief view of the main study objection, advantages and disadvantages. The third part is the analysis of the questionnaires of foreign students, the purpose is to know the degree of satisfaction and needs for the English annotation in TCSL textbooks. The fourth part is the suggestions for compilation of English annotation in elementary TCSL textbooks.
