Translation is a complicated process. There have always been argument about translation theory, especially how to put theory into practice. When in practice, one of the most difficult problem is that how to make the intention of the teller be the same with the expectation of the listeners.Relevance theory(RT) was first proposed by Sperber and Wilson. It’s improved in the field of pragmatics, but has important influence on translation.Ernst-August Gutt is considered to be the first to apply RT to translation studies. In his opinion, translation is a kind of communication, the ultimate goal for translation is its optimal relevance to the source text. The rule of optimal relevance is believed to be able to match the source text communicator’s intention with the target text audience’s expectation. In fact, translation is a process of double ostensive-inferential communication. The thesis is a study of Putin year-old press conference in 2014 from the perspective of RT,especially from the view of communication, cognitive environment and relevance. The aim of the thesis is analyze the practical applicability of RT in the interpreting of the Russian-Chinese press conference, study the process of interpretation, explain the phenomenon.Analyze the case of professional translators, pointing out the problems and the solutions in the interpreting. The author recognized that it’s the interpreter’s accurate choice from assumptive environments that more often decides the translation strategies. So,it’s an successful translation if the interpreter effectively conveys the original intention and yields optimal relevance in the target listener’s cognitive environment.
