A Case Study On Strategies Of Simultaneous Interpretation Based On Cultural Context From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

As a cross-cultural and cross-regional way of communication, interpretation often requires being in a specific context, and there are obvious differences between the cultural contexts of two language groups, which will undoubtedly cause significant influence on the process and quality of interpretation.The thesis uses the simultaneous interpretation of Xi Jinping's speech at UNESCO Headquarters in 2014 as an example to analyze how to interpret properly the content of specific cultural context and sum up the proper strategies of simultaneous interpretation to achieve optimal relevance under the guidance of relevance theory. According to the relevance theory, the ultimate purpose of translation is to find the target language with optimal relevance. When facing the interpretation in cultural context, interpreters should understand the true meaning of the cultural context in the source language and know the cognitive context of the audience of target language in order to achieve the target language with optimal relevance. The thesis discusses the realization of optimal relevance in the interpretation in cultural context from the basic aspects of vocabulary and syntax. Then the thesis classifies the cultural contexts in the research example and sums up four specific strategies of simultaneous interpretation according to the guidance of relevance theory.The thesis aims to provide some help for interpreters in their practice. When facing the interpretation in cultural context, interpreters can choose interpreting strategies flexibly according to the guidance of relevance theory, find the target language with optimal relevance, solve the cultural barriers and improve the quality of interpretation.
