This dissertation discusses the analysis of my master degree work, The Lonely Camel Kid for solo cello and large orchestra. The first chapter of my dissertation explains my idea and composition process in this piece. After I have studied composition for more than ten years, I started to recall my childhood was affected and influenced by folk music in Inner Mongolia, such as "Xilin Gol League", an Inner Mongolia ancient folk song called "Lonely white camel lamb." The song features a long, touching story and melodious folk tune, which led me to begin to think that traditional cultural heritage and development and the harmony between human and nature can coexist. My intention was trying to combine the modern compositional techniques with Inner Mongolia folk music, and write this paper to discuss more in-depth of my thought and compositional techniques for this piece. The second chapter is an analysis detailing my compositional techniques, including how does the motivic material develop, the pitch organization, the form, and how I arrange the sonic structure of the soloist and the orchestra. As I mentioned I was influenced by the ancient Inner Mongolia folk song "lonely white camel." I use this folk tune for my basic pitch material, attempting to make the music have a long breath and a gravitational feeling. Also based on the intertwining of the melody of "Nuo Gula", the multi-voice "Chor", and storyteller tune "Uli Siegel," with the modern compositional techniques, giving this ancient folk tune a "new life". For the timbral techniques, the sound of solo cello is trying to imitate the sound of Ma Tou Qin, a Mongolia traditional folk low-string instrument decorated with a horse head. The timbre of solo cello also features the full orchestra sound, attempting to create a interrelationship between the soloist and orchestra. The structure of the work, although employing the traditional concerto form, is only two large movements. Though typically the first movement of a concerto is sonata form this piece uses multiple parallel adagio sections. Also under the function of solo cello cadenza, typically used to showcase virtuosic playing, but also makes the cadenza become a bridge that connect the first movement and the second movement. The second Allegro movement absorbs the "storyteller tune" to make this piece finish in a climax of intensive rhythmic patterns. What I hope and expect is, this score and dissertation will makes my career in the future more professional, and developing me to a new level.
