The title--Incorporating The Diverse and Harmony in Diversity--means to absorb and harmonize things of different content and nature, with an implication of compromise. This inherits the meaning of “moderation”. “Harmony” is also a noticeable trait of Confucius’ aesthetic ideology, which means the harmonious coexistence of different elements. These traditional Chinese ideas are not only resonating with western art theories, but, after thousands of years, reflected in modern visual designs. Industrial revolutions have promoted the modernism design, and because of the economic development after wars, people’s aesthetic tastes and value orientations have changed gradually, which resulted in the appearance of the post-modernism design. In eclecticism, multi- and mixed-characteristics have become a representative language for the post-modernism design and even for the contemporary design. As the world economy moves ahead today, the effect and potential of contemporary designs become increasingly apparent. contemporary design includes graphic designs, both 2D and 3D, with or without the purpose of communication. It has promoted industrial developments and has a broad prospect. From the viewpoint of “incorporating the diverse and harmony in diversity”, this paper has investigated the contemporary design with respect to its ideological trend, expressional language and design thinking.The third chapter of this paper is carried out with theme of the ideological trend of contemporary design, including three directions: high technology & high emotion, consumerism & anti-consumerism, globalization & localization. We conclude that all design ideas are depending on practical development, so that they cannot be overgeneralized and various opposite design ideas must be integrated and balanced to achieve the “harmony in diversity”. The fourth chapter is mainly to investigate the representation style of contemporary design. Through case discussion and comparative analysis, we come to a conclusion that contemporary visual design language is based on eclectic and multiple consciousness. From skeuomorphism to flattening and from the attractive dynamic effect to the dynamic and static combination, these changes in visual language have further brought a new vitality to visual designs. Only by incorporating these styles and making the best from them, can the contemporary visual design make integration and innovation. Chapter five studies the contemporary visual design thinking in aspects of the convergent thinking, divergent thinking and brainstorming method, all of which reflect the trait of “incorporating the diverse and harmony in diversity”, indicating that differentiation brings fresh ideas while “the pursuit of harmony" shows the importance of completing the final design.In summary, this paper would have researched the background of contemporary visual design and had a discussion on “incorporating the diverse and harmony in diversity”.Thinking about current situation of development of visual design, summarizes the contemporary design phenomenon, dexplore design thinking reflected in the workflow, thus concludes that “incorporating the diverse and harmony in diversity” how reflect all aspects of contemporary visual design.
