Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky(1840- 1893), is one of the Russian outstanding musicians in nineteenth century. His works not only combine traditional composing techniques of Western Europe, but also fully demonstrate the aesthetic features and spiritual characteristics of Russian. Tchaikovsky’s works have been widely accepted and deducted around the world, and becoming the indispensable Russian music works in the music stage. Through his composition, Russian music was gradually opened to the world and was widely paid attention to by its art status rising. The most influential orchestral works by Tchaikovsky is the composition of his symphony, in which Symphony No. 6 the Pathetique is the most famous and classical one. It is one of the most important works by Tchaikovsky, because it is the cohesion of Tchaikovsky’s music composition experience and also a summary of his life experiences.Taking Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 the Pathetique as the research object, mainly in the way of music analysis, this article talks about the composing background and process of Symphony No. 6, the composing techniques, the connotation of society, history and culture.The article is divided into three parts. Firstly, taking Tchaikovsky’s life experiences as a clue, it carries on the inspection to the composer’s life experiences and musical career---- a general summary and understanding of his living background. It describes the composing background and process of Symphony No. 6 according to the composing stage.Secondly, the article carries on the inspection to the processing of his composing techniques. The main research object is the musical theme of each chapter, the whole structure of the musical form, the means of musical expression in texture, tonality, harmony, orchestration and its nature. Thirdly, from a macroscopic view, the article inspects the social development of Russia in the late nineteenth century and Tchaikovsky’s living experiences in his late years, analyses the social and historical connotation in the composing process, and combined with the social and historical environment and Tchaikovsky’s individual psychological characteristics, and studies the humanities connotation of the symphony. Finally, the article discusses the mental state and enlightenment significance of this symphony.
