The fishing-woodcutter image has a long history in Chinese ancient literature. It is full of vitality though always considered as prototypes of history and literary, that could partly reflect the spirit of different period. Ming Dynasty is a period that commodity economy get further development and its novel reach new heights of literary history. There are some new characteristics of the fishing woodcutter image in the novel of Ming Dynasty through the function of figure creation of novel and the features that absorb and reflect the public class of popular literature.The main materials of this paper are notes, poem and paragraph in novels of Ming Dynasty which describe the fishing-woodcutter images. Concluding by these materials, there are seven types of the image. Wisdom mans with hermit plot and common interest; Masters that giving advice or Immortals abroad; Gentleman with honest and faith; Evil Rogues; Fishing-woodcutting Encounter; Disguises; Citizen. This paper discusses the following contents basis on these types of material and through the literary works by the social background. The first part is analysis on the hermit plot, the arrogant temperament and the bosom friendship of nature spirit in fishing-woodcutter image of novels in Ming Dynasty through the hermit culture in Ming. The second part is mainly about the guide of the fishing-woodcutter. The guide of fishing-woodcutter in Ming Dynasty is very popular, the most typical novel is Journey to the West. Basing on Journey to the West and some other novels this part also discusses the cultural function in guide of fishing-woodcutter image. The third part is about the reflection of the culture of “filial piety” and “good”. The Thought of “filial piety” and “good” which has profound influence in culture of ancient China also has its vision in the fishing-woodcutter image in the novel of Ming Dynasty. This part discusses intersection and humanistic style of this thought and the image through confluence of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. The fourth part is about the citizen image. This part discusses the style of period of the citizen as a rising class, the diversification characteristic of the fishing-woodcutter image by the analysis on secularization and citizen converting of the fishing-woodcutter image.
