The Study On The Reception Of Du Fu In The Poetry Theory Of Wang Fuzhi

Wang Fuzhi wrote respectable works during his life time, in which the poetry theory is of great importance. His poetry theory works shows that Wang Fuzhi gradually formed his own system of poetic theory. His positive and negative comments or praise and criticism on Du Fu from his three commentary books of selected poetry and Jiangzhai poetry talks have played an importance role in his poetry theory.The first chapter gives a whole introduction of the poetry theory of Wang Fuzhi. In this part, several aspects are discussed in turn: Wang Fuzhi’s poetry essential theory, a view of poetry expressing, that is to say that the poetry is for lyric use and should be distinguished strictly from other styles; poetry function theory, a view of tender and gentle poem teaching, that is, poem should contribute to feudal education; poetry creation theory, his views on requirement of poetry creation can be deduced from scene relation, present knowledge, the meaning and potential of poetry, and the spirit and rhyme of poetry.The second chapter expounds specifically the compliments of Wang Fuzhi on Du Fu. Several aspects is praised in Wang’s poetry theory: the unique language, emotion blending with surroundings, meaning hiding in the poem, spirit and rhyme, and the art of structure. The compliments of Wang in return further build and support his own poetry theory.The third chapter discusses specifically the negation of Wang Fuzhi on Du Fu in Wang’s poetry theory. Under Wang’s poetry theory, Du Fu’s “history of poetry” theory, satirical poem, poems for food, poems of worldly affairs are not accepted. On the contrary, Wang demonstrates and promotes his poetic views through the negation on Du Fu’s poems.The fourth chapter discusses in turn the comments of and attitudes towards Du Fu in Wang’s five poetry theory books. In conclusion, although there are different commentary angles and mixed attitudes in Wang’s different theory books, the overall attitudes towards Du is to praise Du’s first class artistic achievements and to recognize Du’s status.
