China has laid a great emphasis on agriculture ever since ancient times. The famous saying like “food is the paramount necessity of people” is the best proof, thus food culture has become an important part of Chinese culture. Chinese dishes names could illustrate raw materials and cooking methods. Some dishes names even comprise origins and inventors. Currently foreign people have keen interests in Chinese food culture, therefore, the English translation of Chinese dishes names are of great significance to the spread of Chinese traditional culture and the promotion of communications among people from different countries.Nowadays some scholars have been already aware of the importance of English translation of Chinese dishes names and started to conduct studies, however, majority of the studies are not unsystematic and overlook the communication of cultural connotations of Chinese dishes names.This report is based on the C-E translation of a speech draft on traditional Chinese food culture. There are three chapters in total, besides the introduction and conclusion. The first chapter mainly describes the whole translation task, which includes the source and characteristics of the text and the relevant principle requirements. There is an overall description of the translation process in the second chapter which researches the translation theory, strategies and methods the author employed, and talks about the quality control as well as the evaluation from advisor and native speaker. The third chapter mainly dwells upon the specific cases. On this basis, the author puts forward the translating methods for different type of different dishes names and other methods in the translation. The conclusion summarizes the author’s experiences and the inspirations.All in all, the author believes that much more attention should be paid to the significance of the report,and experiences and methods on the translation of this kind of text should be summarized, which make more translators obtain a preliminary understanding in this area.
