Opera, as the artistic treasure of Chinese nation, is collecting the research and endeavors of the past generations of artists and develops with human progress. From the ancient times till now, artists have developed various kinds of classical opera arts which turn out to be precious wealth for us. Opera can explain life, simulate time and space and gives a comprehensive demonstration of the normal life style of our nation as well as our expectations, anticipations and life goals, forming the vivid Chinese history that moves our heart. Opera is an integration of literary, painting, martial arts, acrobatics and many other artistic forms. Opera character image is a critical artistic significance in the performance of this audio-visual art.Temporary stage play witnesses a stably development in China. This kind of stage art which is rooted in the soil of western culture is featured by its realistic trait when compared with traditional Chinese opera. Character image design in stage plays can clearly demonstrate the background and time feature of the figure. The stylized traditional opera is comparably obscure when compared with the straightway stage play and our young people are gradually losing interest in it. How to integrate the traditional culture with the more active temporary stage play and how to gain a new understanding for traditional culture and pass it down to the coming generations are the urgent and difficult task we are facing with.The thesis takes the character shapes in traditional Chinese opera as well as its contribution to the design of figures in contemporary stage plays as main objects, conducts induction and summarizing for the the features and cultural connotation of character shapes in operas and renders corresponding conclusions. The thesis starts from the development and aesthetic principles of traditional opera and explores the beauty of form, image and artistic conception as well as the aesthetic significance. Then it generalize and summarize the shape characters and features of different roles in opera and then analyzes the character shape features and cultural connotation in a great many literature materials. Moreover, it explores the development of contemporary stage plays, summarizes the realistic principles in character shape design as well s the freehand characteristics of the new stage plays. Finally the thesis analyzes the stage plays that are performed in present days to find out how do they integrate traditional opera elements in the design of their character image.At last, the author applies the character image design element blends in integrate infuse traditional Chinese opera in the figures of temporary stage plays by the practical participation in the performance of the drama Flying Lightly. The thesis summarizes the fact that "the new application of old stuff’ can enhance artistic attraction, draws this indispensable art close to the people, passes the traditional culture down in a better way and provides some reference and enlightenment for further research of the forthcoming scholars.
