Since China has implemented the opening-up policy, higher education is also gradually moving towards a greater openness. Especially in the last decade, Chinese-foreign cooperation in the field of higher education is booming. As a result, an increasing number of students are attending Ielts in order to study abroad. However, currently, the situation of IELTS teaching in China is still far from being satisfactory, especially in part of IELTS listening. Therefore, in order to regulate IELTS teaching, help candidates to achieve scores they need, the need for the research in this aspect is urgent. It is rather promising to start my research from the ‘top-down’ and ‘bottom-up’ models. The first chapter consists of four parts, namely, the importance of listening, major factors affecting listening, introduction of Ielts listening and Ielts listening teaching status. The second chapter studies the research result of current Ielts listening teaching in four aspects, the background information input, the study method of listening, test-oriented techniques, and other teaching content. The third chapter introduces the mental model of Johnson-Laird, ‘top-down’ and ‘bottom-up’ psychological information processing mode. In the fourth and fifth chapter, this paper attempts to find problems and solutions by distributing questionnaires to Ielts learners. The last two chapters elaborate the conclusion drawn from the research. It is rather innovative and necessary to develop a teaching method catering to Ielts listening by combining the listening theory and the features of Ielts and studying the factors affecting listening, in the hope of finding a more feasible and effective approach to study Ielts listening.
