Research On The Lottery System Of Ren Citang In Macao During The Quasi-colonial Period

At the end of fifteenth century, in order to spread Catholicism, Portugal set up Ren Citang in Lisbon. With overseas expansion, in 1568, D. Belchior Carniero Leitatilde, the Catholic bishop in Macao parish, set up Ren Citang in Macao, taking charge of charitable relief works in order to win popularity and to achieve their mission objectives. The lottery income is the main source of income of Ren Citang in Macao, after over 130 years’ release, the lottery system has formed gradually, which has great impact on the politics, economy and culture.Based on the bidding regulations and bidding contract regulations which are published on the Macao Gazette, with a large number of historical documents, this article divides the development stages of lottery system in Ren Citang, elaborating the basic system of lottery and its influences as well. To be specific, in this article, the second chapter summarizes the background, quality, function and its basic operation process of lottery system in detail. And the third chapter divides the lottery system of Ren Citang in Macao during the quasi-colonial period into three stages, the beginning,the flourishing stage and the declining time. Besides, the development of lottery system is included as well. The fourth chapter detailedly analyzes the basic lottery system in Ren Citang, Macao, including the acquirement of lottery management right,mortgage、guarantee、contract deadline etc. The last chapter discusses the great impact of lottery system on the society. Through the whole discussion of the first four chapters, with the quasi-colonial background, this article discusses the influence of lottery system in the aspect of politics, economy, and culture respectively.In conclusion, during the quasi-colonial period, the process of lottery system from budding to prosperity to fading not only represents the development of Macao charitable career and promotes the spread of Catholicism, it also helps to stabilize the social order. And therefore, this research on the lottery system in Ren Citang, Macao,during the quasi-colonial period is of special significance.
