With “globalization” gaining its popularity worldwide, films, as a kind of media, art form, and product, naturally can’t stand outside of it. Films should go global not merely as an industrial economy or a carrier of culture but, more importantly, as a showcase of the soft power of Chinese culture to the rest world. Films can represent national values and images through the characters, plot and social background they presents, which can exert a great influence on the nation’s participation in international affairs. The successful overseas dissemination of Chinese films needs seeking a common ground between “localization” and “internalization” to achieve the unity of Chinese values and values of the world. Primarily, Chinese films must have international influence and the values which could be accepted by the rest world so as to have a foothold in the international film world, which is the starting point and value of this paper. This paper consists of four sections. Chapter one mainly explains in detail the theoretical literatures of Chinese film moving to the world from two aspects. One aspect is the reward strategy of the world’s four major film festivals and research status of aesthetics; another aspect is an analysis of the contribution of the whole China’s film industry to the world film industry. Chapter two mainly goes through the awards gained by Chinese films and makes a statistical analysis ofthemes and characters in the films with three European film festivals as the starting point. Chapter three selects films of "fifth-generation”, “sixth-generation" and new generation according to the statistical result of last chapter and classified the narrative characteristics of Chinese films. Based on the above analysis, chapter four concludes the strategies of improving the ability to spread abroad Chinese films from the angles of construction and dissemination of film culture.
