This dissertation is a comparison study on the image of the female’s characters portrayed in both Zhang Ailing’s and Choi Jung-hee’s novels from the 1930s to 1940s.In the literature works of Zhang Ailing and Choi Jung-hee during the earlier part of the 20th century, an ideology the women’s liberation movement which had originated from the west was gaining much attention with the female population both in China and Korea among the educated women who had undergone their studies under the new education system. During this period women who accepted the new modern education under the influence of Western culture and thought of the women’s liberation movement, and gradually began the conscious level of consciousness. China and Korea’s social background and two writers living environment has resulted in two writer’s many common points. Two writers had faced a similar social backgrounds and life experiences. Thus, as similar women writers keen observation, delicate feelings were expressed about women’s issues.Writer’s experience has a significant impact on his writing. The contents include the writer’s social background and life experience. Dominance of man, oppression and exploitation of women’s social structure and conventional system influenced writer’s making female character.By observing the modernity and consciousness of the females in women’s literature during the 19th century from the period of the 1930s to 1940s, this thesis aims to justify and display how a patriarchal society and the male-centered society would inadvertently administrate and assimilate the female population and ultimately become a tool that suppresses the female’s notion. This paper also aims to sort out the women’s status and consciousness towards the forlornness of life which is a result due to self-denial and sacrifices that is deep-rooted with disapproval towards rational entity.This study used parallel comparative literature research methods, From the feminist perspective in analysing the literature composition of Zhang Ailing’s and Choi Jung-hee’s novels, this paper aims to discover and restore the nature of women as a human being towards its self and thus regaining their rightful status in the society.
