The generalized character philosophy asks us to re-examine the human civilization and culture under the vision of globalization. And character research is no limited to several less controversial and basically qualitative ancient nation. So Indian civilization gradually comes into sight of cultural researchers.Today, more and more Indian tribes are disappearing, at the same time the traditional culture of Indian is under threat of extinction. Therefore it is an urgent task to study Indian culture. A large number of experts and scholars dedicate themselves to this great career so that Pueblo potters insist on the history of pottery-making for nearly two thousand years. I also hope I can use this thesis to make my own modest contribution so that more people know the Pueblo and their culture. Then I try to make a new road under the professor’s research. In this thesis, I try my best to study the whole Pueblo pottery and traditional cultural backgrounds which based on the literature research as detailed as possible. At the same time the author use the method of classification research to analyze these pottery patterns. At the end the author discuss these pattern’s nature based on the above. This thesis consists of four parts of contents:At first, the author makes simple introductions of Indian Pueblo’s geography and humanities. This will lay the foundation for the following research. In the second part the author uses the method of comprehensive analysis to make an overall description of the Pueblo pottery:from the origin to the production process, the whole pottery art is full of rich Indian Pueblo flavor. Then the author divides the Pueblo pottery into three types:corrugated pottery, plain pottery and painted pottery.Among of them the decorative patterns on the painted pottery are the points of the thesis as well as the contents of the third part. In this chapter, the author makes further classifications. Depend on whether the decorative patterns are ideographic or not, the author divided the painted pottery into two groups and six types. In the process of research, the author displayed many pictures in order to match with the text. This method is helpful to enhance the accuracy and reliability of the content, at the same time makes the thesis more interesting. The fourth part further analyzes the nature of theses pottery patterns especially the ideographic patterns. They are naturally early visual symbol of the combination of form and meaning. They play an important role in the communication between human and God, and they also express the mind of primitive man. So the author uses the research method of the pre-character theory under the generalized character philosophy to explore the ideographic nature of these patterns. The last part is the conclusion.
