According to the study of Dunhuang frescoes decorative patterns of the Sui Dynasty, this thesis discusses their art features, basic characteristics and aesthetic value mainly from the view of fine arts, graphics and psychology.This thesis begins with the overview about the importance of Dunhuang’s location, the historical background about the Sui Dynasty unification and the revival of Buddhism. Furthermore, this thesis expounds the importance of the Sui Dynasty Dunhuang frescoes decorative patterns for the patterns’later development though the analysis to Dunhuang frescoes pattern and the comparison of the patterns in different periods. At the same time, this thesis explores the meticulosity and classic according to the aesthetic ideal at a certain point in history. In addition, this thesis uses graphics and its composition rule to analyze the pattern’s logical order and space shaping, and then analyze in detail with the decorative patterns, their forms and the diversity of their colors. Secondly, this thesis makes a thorough inquiry about the aesthetic value of the Sui Dynasty Dunhuang frescoes pattern from the aspect of formal beauty. Finally, this thesis elaborates the creators’ traditional creative ideas, positive changes and their ingenious methods which can also show the true historical environment, and then gives train of thought about the decorative patterns’creation and application to provide a better inheriting environment and carry forward Chinese traditional aesthetic and design concept.
