The research of Dunhuang decorative pattern is an extremely important area in the field of Dunhuang’s grotto art-especially the study of Dunhuang’s decorative pattern shapes, compositions, colors and aesthetic rules. It is of great significance to Chinese traditional culture given the patterns’ lasting influence on modern design.This paper focuses on the geometric patterns of the Dunhuang grotto as objects for research. First, this paper classifies the typical geometrical pattern from the different historical periods, taking into account pattern:class; type; cave number; decoration areas; age; images; and source information. This information is combined with pictures of the patterns to describe the modeling, colors and forms that are characteristic of each category. By analyzing the patterns’decorative functions and characteristics, this paper then summarizes the formal laws of beauty that are reflected in the Dunhuang geometric patterns.In this paper, by classifying and analyzing the type of Dunhuang geometric patterns and characteristic, we summarized the law of formal beauty of Dunhuang geometric patterns after we know better about those files and put forward some ideas and opinions on how to combine with modern design. In one respect, the purpose of this research is to generate information relevant to Dunhuang’s decorative patterns-especially to complement the studies of those patterns that have not been heavily utilized in previous applications. Furthermore, another important respect is to expound the basic theory of decorative pattern design by using traditional decorative pattern art as an analogy.The reason why the Chinese traditional decorative patterns are beautiful and outstanding is because of the patterns are a creation which contains and follows the law of formal beauty. It is also important to handle the law of formal beauty in various fields of modern art design. Therefore, the contemporary designers should pay more attention to research and draw lessons from Chinese traditional decorative pattern art, excavating and learning the art and design rules and also making a full use of the law in modern design. These practices will allow individuals to create works of art and design that contain the flavor of traditional culture and the spirit of the age.
