| China Daily is recognized as one of the most authoritative English publications in our country to transmit the latest information to people via language. China Daily news is often forwarded by major international news agencies, newspapers, radio stations and TV stations. It’s published to the world’s 150 countries and regions with an average daily circulation of 300,000 copies. The society news of China Daily contains the reports about social events, social issues and social style in the daily life of Chinese people. As the soul of news, news headline plays a crucial role in news transmission. Previous researches on news headlines of China Daily mainly analyze vocabulary, grammar, rhetorical devices, stylistic features and translation skills. There have been no researches on language meme in news headlines of China Daily.Memetics, based on the theory of biological evolution, is a new theory to interpret cultural evolution. It can be applied to study many language phenomena and provides a brand new perspective for English news headlines. Meme, the core concept of memetics and the gene of culture evolution, exists from replication and transmission. Meme and language interact with each other. Language is a carrier of meme. By collecting two hundred and four society news headlines of China Daily as research data, this thesis attempts to apply memetics to the analysis of language memes in society news headlines of China Daily. First, the thesis generalizes the characteristics and functions of society news headlines in China Daily. Next, language meme in society news headlines of China Daily is analyzed from lexical, syntactic, voice, tense and rhetorical levels. Besides, the thesis classifies the transmission of language meme in society news headlines of China Daily into two kinds:genotype transmission and phenotype transmission. At last, the thesis summarizes the formation, features and functions of strong memes in the replication and transmission of society news headlines of China Daily, aimed at making people better understand language memes in society news headlines of China Daily and helping news reporters consciously use memes to create better news headlines, thus achieving a more effective worldwide transmission of China Daily news. |
