E-C Translation Of English Movie Titles From The Perspective Of Linguistic Memetics

From the perspective of Memetics,translation of film title is the process of meme replication and transmission.This paper,therefore,is based on the research results of numerous scholars,including the theory of linguistic meme.Selection of film title translations are sorted out from the top 147 English-language movies as rated by DOUBAN User,the top 250 English-language movies as rated by IMDB User,the EXPERIENCE OVER TWO DECADES OF THE OSCARS OF BEST PICTURE FROM 1998 TO 2018 and some other English movies boasting high ratings.It is a comparative study of three translated versions of three places of China: Chinese mainland,Hong Kong and Taiwan.This paper creates a parallel “one to three” corpus: the original title of the film--Chinese mainland translation + Taiwan translation + Hong Kong translation.The thesis,from the two transmission ways of the meme: genotype and phenotype transmission mode,mainly deals with the interpretations of English movie titles by comparing the three Chinese versions.In the course of thesis composing,the research method of individual case analysis and incorporate case analysis were adopted to explore the strong linguistic memes: semantic equivalence meme,pragmatic equivalent meme,phonetic derivation meme,semantic derivation meme,form-meaning compound meme,and morphologic derivation meme connoted.It found that in the course of English movie title translation,the creation of strong linguistic memes of the target language in the film titles is beneficial to the replication and dissemination of films among the target language audience.Finally,based on the strong linguistic memes of different target languages reflected in the title translation,the author proposes the translation methods that can be used in the English translation of film titles.First,from the transmission mode of Memetic Genotype,literal translation,transliteration,zero translation,paraphrase interpretation,imitation translation,and creative translation can be adopted to achieve the equivalence of the literal,deep and communicative meaning between the translation and the source text.Second,from the transmission mode of Memetic Phonotype,the idiomatic translation should be adopted to achieve meaningful association with the help of structure.
