Xinjiang, characterized by multiculturalism, is rich in its cultural resources. As the continuance of stationing and reclamation culture, Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps culture(XJPCC culture for short) is an integral part of Xinjiang culture, and it plays an important role in communicating advanced science and technology, carrying forward mainstream culture, and promoting the Chinese nation’s identity of Xinjiang people. Studying XJPCC culture has great significance to fulfilling the mission of reclamation and guarding the frontier, enhancing soft power of frontier culture, carrying forward the spirit of reclamation, as well as protecting sovereignty of national culture.By using the paradigm of Chinese Discourse Studies(CNDS) to analyze the communication characteristics of XJPCC culture, this thesis studies the discourses of reports on XJPCC culture from 1954 to 2013 in People’s Daily. It adopts both quantitative and qualitative research methods. First, frequency of reports is analyzed. Then, based on the quantitative analysis, the author qualitatively analyzes the discourses of XJPCC culture by using the theory of CNDS from four aspects of content, agents, media, as well as the historical changes along the development of XJPCC culture.By analyzing these data, this study shows: 1) The communication of XJPCC culture is paid attention along the development of XJPCC; 2) The agents of discourse include central government, autonomous government, XJPCC government, division/army officers, grass-roots unit, jim-dandies, soldiers, experts/scholars, and common people; 3) The content of XJPCC culture is divided into seven categories: ideology, education, science, literature and art, radio and television, sports, and health; 4) The main media of discourse communication are training classes, guidance, schools, exhibitions, books, visit, experimental research, movements, activities, meetings, seminars, matches, ceremonies and performances; 5) The agents of discourse are changing, government at different levels increasing attention to attach great importance to the development of XJPCC culture, common people have more opportunities to raise their voice in the discourses of XJPCC culture, the content of XJPCC culture is increasingly enriched and the media of the discourse become various. From this study, it can be found that there is much voice from the high level of government in the discourses of communication of XJPCC culture. As culture is formed in the social practice of people, it should pay more attention to common people to involve them in various cultural activities in the process of communication of culture. This thesis provides a historical and cultural perspective for discourse study on XJPCC culture, and it enriches the empirical scope of Chines Discourse Studies. At the same time, this study makes contribution to the communication of XJPCC culture as well.
