On Conversion Of Logical Conjunction In C-E Translation

As a prosaic novel,A Breeze into the Woods is characterized by poetic style in such aspects as giving priority to psychological description, focusing on reflection of atmosphere and scenes in the story. The seemingly loose textual structure, however, is closely related to personality traits of characters and the plot development. The languages in the novel adopts a large number of ellipsis, repetition, conjunctive words, which presents a implicit coherence in logical conjunction. This paper, based on the translation practice novel of A Breeze into the Woods, tries to find out the characteristics of logical connection of the novel in constructing discourse coherence by comparing the explicit logic connection in English discourse and implicit logical connection in Chinese text. Eventually, the paper improves the discourse coherence in the target language by explicit its logic connection between the clauses and sentences.Under the guidance of logic-semantic relations theory, the paper aims at completing the transformation from implicit logical conjunction to the explicit one in the translation through the discussion of language features in prosaic novels and analysis of the cohesion among words, sentences and paragraphs. The paper, first of all, introduces the concept of logical connection and the difference of explicit and implicit logical connection in English and Chinese discourse. Then, the thesis introduces the implicit logical connection phenomenon in the novel through the detailed examples from three main logic semantic relations, namely, amplification relation, extension relation and enhancement relation. Finally, this article focuses on the application of various translation methods to realize explicit logical conjunction in the targeted language. In this part, this paper firstly enforce the amplification relation through two methods: unifying subjects and add connective words or phrases. Secondly, this paper discusses the conjunction function of extension relation by adopting three translation methods: reverting simple sentences into complex ones, substitution and changing the word order. In the end the paper enhances enhancement relation by the methods of adding adverbial and merging sentences or clauses in the translation process.This project tries to improve explicit logic connection in the Chinese-English translation via seven representative translation methods During the translation process, this paper deals with three main difficulties: Firstly, because the original text is characterized by a number of description of psychological activities and environment, which manifests implicit logical conjunction, it requires the translator to use appropriate vocabulary to reproduce closely-linked emotional context behind the description in virtue of studying the author’s writing intention; Secondly, it becomes hard to adopt idiomatic English expression to convey seemly loose-constructed description of civic life in the original text; Thirdly, it is demanding to translate various colloquial words and proverbs without weakening local style of the original novel.
