Speech presentation mode is an important part of the novel which plays the key part in characterization, plot development, and novel rhythm. Novel translation needs not only to convey meaning but also to retain the literary value of the original work. The choice of speech presentation modes directly affects readers’ feeling to the work. This paper takes the short story “The Dower House at Kellynch: A Somerset Romance” translation materials as a case, based on the classification of the speech presentation from Britain stylist Leech and Short, discusses how the translator should deal with all kinds of speech presentation in translation to both retain the original aesthetic value and meet the readers’ habit of thinking, talking and reading.According to Leech and Short, speech presentation can be divided into five types: verbal behavior narrative, indirect speech, free indirect speech, direct speech and free direct speech. This paper first makes an analysis on Chinese speech presentation, then combines with the examples in this paper, which sums up the skills of speech presentation modes from English into Chinese as follows: in general, in pursuit of the translation on the aesthetic and artistic effect with equivalent of the original, the translator should not change the speech presentation mode of the original. But under certain conditions, the translator needs to adopt appropriate modes of speech presentation to express different effects. The direct speech has a strong sound effect, it’s better to keep the form when translating; free direct speech is to the benefit of speeding up the narrative process; free indirect speech is special in form, when translating, the first thing to do is to distinguish it correctly and then carry it out in accordance with the principles of speech presentation translation. This article aims to remind the translator should grasp different speech presentation modes and adopt flexible translation strategies to convey the original information correctly and improve the quality of discourse translation.
