Naipaulis one of the most representative immigrant and postcolonial writers. As Naipaul’s last fiction, Magic Seeds, with the postcolonial India and London as the background, narrates thedilemma and struggles of a diversity of communities. It displays the underdeveloped economy, the chaotic society and politics of India after its independence and postcolonial Londoners’ inner predicament and spiritual void as well. This thesis analyzes the theme of homelessness in Magic Seeds from the perspective of the postcolonial studies in order to reveal Naipaul’s postcolonial concern and reflections on the colonial past in this novel. It briefly reviewsNaipaul’s diasporic writing and the researches of Magic Seeds in the first chapter to raise the research question. Then, it expounds key concepts concerning homelessness to form the theoretical framework in the second chapter. The third and fourth chapters analyzethe representation of homelessness of Indians and Africans in terms of geography and culture respectively. In addition, London people’s inner homelessness is analyzed in terms of their egoism and the sense of loss of home in the fifth chapter. Through analyzing the various aspects of homelessness in the margin mainly represented by India and the center represented by London in Magic Seeds, it concludes that in the postcolonial period, both the ex-colonizers and ex-colonizedhave been victims and the relationship between the margin and the center is shaken. |
