Motivation is one of the most important factors that have an effect on second language learning. It is generally considered to be a key factor in second language learning by second language researchers. So, study on the motivation of learners of Chinese has great significance for learning Chinese as a second language.As the number of people who come to China for learning Chinese is gradually increasing, it is important for us to figure out the motivation of the elementary learners of Chinese and the relevance among the elements of their motivation, and to analyze the reason for the difference of the learning motivation of the elementary learners of Chinese from different cultural circles and to put forward relevant teaching strategies.These efforts will help the Chinese teachers to understand their students, make teaching plans, arrange teaching contents and improve their teaching effect.Based on the L2 Motivational Self System theory of D?rnyei, this research adopted both quantitative and qualitative methods including questionnaire, classroom observation and interview to explore the motivation of the elementary learners of Chinese. Participants of this study are the elementary learners of Chinese from Chongqing University who were divided into different groups in terms of culture circles.Major findings of the present study are as the followings: 1) The instrumentality-promotion of the elementary learners of Chinese is significantly correlated with their the ideal L2 self; 2) the L2 learning experience is the strongest motivation for the elementary learners of Chinese; 3) on the whole, the Chinese character culture circle learners’ motivation is stronger than the Non-Chinese character culture circle learners’. Finally, according to the research results, the author puts forward some suggestions to stimulate the enthusiasm of students to learn Chinese.
