The expression of art is an enduring topic in the theory of aesthetics. As a master of American pragmatism, John Dewey think an act of expression is the result of the interaction between the live creatures and the environment. In the field of Art, Expression is the result of the artist persistent pursuit of complete experience, in the process of expression, emotion become clear gradually through the media.The thesis mainly discusses artistic expression theory of John Dewey. Under the perspective of Dewey’s performance, expression is restructuring as well as experience. Expression is no longer an isolated incident that is only limited to the artist or to the appreciation. The thesis consists of four parts: The first part of the thesis mainly introduce the philosophical foundation of Dewey’s art theory. Starts from Dewey’s transformation of experiences, he restore continuity between the experiences and human life as well as nuture, then construct the theory of everyday life through elaborate the core of the thought "art as experience". The second chapter analyzes the expression in art creation. This chapter describes two aspects- expression and action as well as expression and emotion. From this chapter, we come up with a conclusion that the emotions can be clearly demonstrated through the processes of expression. The third chapter talks about the expressive of works of art. Dewey point out the works of art guide and reconstruct the perception in the experiences of appreciator, perception connect artistic and aesthetic. Communication showing the meaning of the expression. No matter we are creating or appreciating a piece of art, expression is the transformation from personalities to “an experience”. Through reviewing the history of Art Expression history, the fourth chapter shows that Dewey’s theory is still in the stage that focuses on the contents of the expression itself; however, at the same time, it also includes the characteristics of practical philosophy and cultural philosophy.
