A Study On Translation Of "Human Is Animal"Metaphor In Red Sorghum Within The Framework Of Conceptual Metaphor Theory

Under the influence of cogniti ve science, research on metaphor has been increasingly fram ed by the pe rspective of cognitive linguistics instead of traditional rhetoric. Ba sed on Conceptual Metaphor Theory, metaphor is pervasive in daily langua ge and thought. Hence, Conceptual Metaphor Theory can give a new insight to analyze metaphor and metaphor translation.In literary translation, metaph or translation occupies a prom inent place in the whole translation. Red Sorghum is one of the best-selling novels in English countries, becom ing a good m aterial for studying C-E metaphor translation. From the pers pective of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, this thesis expounds how Goldblatt handles “HUMAN IS ANIMAL” metaphor in Red Sorghum, comprehensively analyzes t he metaphorical mappings from the source text to the tar get text, and summarizes the translation methods adopted in translating “HUMAN IS ANIMAL” metaphor.This thesis focuses on the analysis of HUMAN IS ANIMAL metaphor. Having perceived animals’ rich characters, hum ans use animals’ behaviors to understand their own, thus creating the conceptual metaphor HUMAN IS ANIMAL. In Red Sorghum, there are twenty-two kinds of t his conceptual m etaphor, playing a key role in enriching t he source text.This thesis also concludes four methods for HUMAN IS ANIMAL metaphor in Red Sorghum: 1) directly transplanting the source domain; 2) maintaining the source do main and manifesting the special mapping; 3) changing the source domain into its hypcronym; 4) using plain words to paraphrase the source domain.This thesis is a scientific validation of Conceptual Metaphor Theory. Through the translation of HUMAN IS ANIMAL metaphor, this thesis proves that Conceptual Metaphor Theory can give a better explanation of metaphor translation and guide metaphor translation practice.
